NEO Hispanics launch new political action committee with endorsement of candidates

CLEVELAND, July 23, 2021: Hispanic leaders in Northeast Ohio are excited to announce the launching of The Latinx NEO Fund, a political action committee created for the purpose of engaging Latinx communities and the public-at-large in activities that will increase Hispanic/Latinx participation in the political process.

Research shows, Hispanic/Latinx communities are civically engaged at extraordinary levels in their native countries, which serves as a core element of the culture. For example, voter turnout is well over 90 percent in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries. In contrast, the Latino vote in the U.S., while growing, still remains low. According to the Pew Research Center, about 32 million Hispanics were eligible to vote in 2020, and 16.1 million voted.

Lorraine Vega, founding member of the Latinx NEO Fund said, “growth is especially significant since the last Census (2010) has shown an increase in Cleveland’s Latinx population, while the overall population has declined.”  In 2019, the U.S. Census data showed 48,199 Hispanics were living in Cleveland, and 77,343 in Cuyahoga County.

The mission of the Fund is to increase and enhance the quality of information regarding candidates, legislative issues, elections and election processes that affect the growing Hispanic/Latinx population.  The Fund will also give a voice to issues of importance to Latinx communities.

To kick off the creation of Latinx NEO Fund, the group celebrates its first two endorsed candidates, Nina Turner for the 11th congressional district, and Councilwoman Jasmin Santana for Ward 14 in the city of Cleveland.

Jose Villanueva, another founding member, stated, “The Fund’s endorsement of Jasmin Santana for re-election as Cleveland City Council representative of Ward 14 is an acknowledgement of the accomplishments of the Councilwoman during her first term, selection as Majority Whip, and her vision for the future of residents of Ward 14, Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.”

During a recent visit to with the former Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Carmen Yulin Cruz, the Latino NEO Fund announced their endorsement of Nina Turner’s candidacy for Congress of Ohio’s 11thDistrict. The Fund recognizes the inclusive efforts of Turner’s campaign with the Latino community and the need for someone at the national level who is sensitive to the needs and concerns of Latinx communities.

Also recognizing the mission of the Fund and the significance of the occasion, founding member Adrian Maldonado stated, “the endorsement of these candidates and the support for Turner lays the groundwork for more coordinated efforts of equity and inclusion in the political process, and access to the tools needed to communicate with the Hispanic/Latinx population in Northeast Ohio.”
