Lorain Historical Society celebrates the 100th Anniversary of Latinos in Lorain

To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Latinos in Lorain and in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, The Latino Lorain History Project is launching its first exhibit at the Carnegie Center from September 15 – October 30.

Focusing on Vine Avenue as one of the legendary hotspots representing Latino history in Lorain, the exhibit is a culmination of over a year of collaboration among El Centro, the Lorain Historical Society, Oberlin College, and leaders in the community.  The exhibit will open to the public beginning on Wednesday, September 15 and continue every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday through October 30 from 10 – 3 at the Carnegie Center, located at 329 W. 10th Street in Lorain.

The content of the exhibit is taken primarily from oral history interviews of a number of Latinos in Lorain who recall living on or around Vine Avenue in the 50’s and 60’s.  The themes of religion and spirituality, blending of cultures, and entrepreneurship are highlighted in the exhibit panels.  It is hoped that young people in Lorain will capture the spirit and the vibe of Vine Avenue and explore ways to recreate that sense of community today, thus preserving the legacy of their Latino heritage for themselves and generations to come.

Opportunities will be provided for members of the Latino community to sign up for oral history interviews or to share archival materials with the historical society on scanning days.  An interactive timeline of the last 100 years will enable children to interact with the history of their community and learn more about the heritage of the Latinos in the City of Lorain.
